An Introduction to Readings

This entry is the first installment of a five-blog series on Understanding Readings.
Who hasn’t seen a show or movie where a woman wearing a silk turban and layers of crystal jewelry looks into a crystal ball to “see into the future”? Unfortunately, those images conjure mystery, a sense of danger, and fraud rather than reality.
While crystal balls are cool, these scenes do not accurately reflect what intuitive (a.k.a. psychic) readings are. The props and costume create an ominous setting designed to heighten the mystery.
Intuitive readings are not ominous. At their best, they can offer guidance, clarity, and personal insight into your current life situation. A reading cannot predict a person's future with certainty. A reading is better understood as insight into possibilities rather than a fixed prediction of what will happen. Instead, it may help you look at personal challenges from another perspective, consider possible ways forward, and pay closer attention to your own instincts. (See What to Expect) (Where to Begin)
Additionally, in TV shows, movies, and unfortunately, real life, the readers and their “readings” often are seen as sinister, fake, and scams. I cannot speak to Hollywood, but there are practitioners who may not always have your best interests at heart. (See Red Flags)
When getting a reading, it’s important that you be an active participant – before, during, and after. As a reader, I've met people who arrive skeptical and almost challenge me to "see” or “read” them. Skepticism is natural and welcome, but it needn’t be antagonistic. Others come to the reading without any questions or ideas of what they seek to hear. While doable, will you be genuinely be open to hear what the reading reveals? Active participation includes gaining insight into areas of your life, being open to hearing that insight, and keeping that information in mind moving forward. (See Be Prepared)
Finally, there are countless modalities in which to obtain a reading. You’ve heard of reading tea leaves, but did you know toothpicks, runes, faces, knees, bones, cards, animals, and crystal balls (i.e., scrying) are read too? Knowing which type of reading is best for you is important. (See Types of Readings)
